Nin
Nin has been continuously inhabited for more than 3000 years. The town was founded in the 9th century BC by the Liburnians, when it was known as Aenona. In the early 7th century, the Croats established the town of Nin on the ruins of this settlement, and it became the first political, religious and cultural centre of the mediaeval state. This is why Nin proudly bears the title of the oldest Croatian royal city. Its old town core is located on a small island surrounded by long sandy beaches, and the town also includes 6 other settlements: Nin, Zaton, Grbe, NinskiStanovi, Poljica-Brig and Žerava. Located 15 kilometres from Zadar, Nin is a town that is pleasant both to stay in and live in, and it also distinguishes itself with its rich cultural and historical heritage. It also features the smallest cathedral in the world and the coronation church of St Nicholas, as well as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Nin’s sandy beaches are one of its trademarks and are considered to be among the most beautiful beaches in Croatia and the world alike. The warm and shallow waters of Nin’s beaches make them particularly attractive to families with children, while the winds in Nin Lagoon (Ninska laguna) make the bay perfect for surfing and hang-gliding. The total length of all beaches in Nin amounts to a whopping 8000 metres. Nin also features medicinal mud that is able to cure many illnesses, as well as a saltworks where production is based on millennia-old tradition. In 2010, Nin was declared a European Centre of Excellence.
